UNILAG – LAGOSBOOKSCLUB.WORDPRESS.COM (2024)

Sep122015

Long faces, broken spirits and an atmosphere filled with grief welcome you to the home. Tucked in a reserved part of Okota, a sprawling suburb in the heart of Lagos, the neighbourhood has perhaps seen more visitors over the last few days than at any previous time in its history. Since the tragic demise of Oluchi Anekwe, a 300 level accounting student of the University of Lagos who was electrocuted on campus last Tuesday evening, the flow of sympathisers has swelled by the minute – men, women and even children – everybody has turned up to commiserate with the household. It is the most difficult period for the Anekwes, a catholic family from Aku in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State.

A promising, God-loving and talented young lady, Oluchi had everything going for her. At barely 22 (she could have attained that age on December 5); she was on top of her academic and social life. A high flying student of accounting with an envious grade in school – first class – her dream of becoming a renowned investment banker in the future was gradually taking shape. To further cement her future and enrich her resume, Oluchi was already preparing to sit for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria exams later this month in her bid to become chartered before graduating from the university. Such was her love for excellence. But last Tuesday, all those lofty dreams went up in flames after tragedy struck. Oluchi would now be buried on the week she was supposed to sit for the ICAN test – an ambition she had pursued with unflinching passion and determination in recent months.

“It still feels like a dream that my daughter is gone,” Chief Basil Anekwe, her distraught father told our correspondent on Thursday at the family home. Days of shedding tears had taken toll on him. His eyes were a bit swollen while his skin had become unusually pale – a testament to how heartbroken his daughter’s tragic and sudden demise had left him.

“She was the star of the family,” he continued. “Always striving to become the best at her academics. Even as a first class student, she wasn’t satisfied, she wanted to break records and was already discussing where she would prefer to do her Master’s degree. That was who Oluchi was.

“I remember that last Sunday, she called and asked me to send her some money since her elder sister, Nkem, was staying with her at her apartment behind the school because of the distance from Okota to her office. I promised that she was going to get some money from me by Wednesday at most. So, on Wednesday morning that I had planned to go send her the money, I got a call from my eldest son that Oluchi was very ill and that she was in the hospital. Suddenly, I saw my driver show up at my apartment in Ogun State where I work; I was surprised to see him. Not quite long, my son called and told me that he had sent the driver to pick me to come to Lagos as a result of Oluchi’s sickness. At that point, I became restless. The driver didn’t utter a word to me.

“When I finally got to Lagos, I asked to be taken to the hospital to see her. I insisted on seeing her at the hospital because I assumed she was alive. But when we got to LUTH and the driver was going towards the mortuary, I began to think that the girl might have died after all. I insisted on seeing her and they wheeled her out of the morgue, she was almost laughing. One of my daughters brought out holy water and rubbed it on her mouth, telling her to stand up that we were here to take her home. Her neck was still lose, it wasn’t stiff yet. In fact most parts of her body were still not stiff after staying there throughout the night. My wife wasn’t even aware at that point. It was later that evening that the news was broken to her.

“Her death is a big loss to us,” he said before breaking down in tears.

Oluchi’s immediate elder sibling, Nkem – a practising lawyer – gave a vivid account of her last moments before the sad incident. The 26-year-old told Saturday PUNCH that the accounting undergraduate could have survived had staff of the UNILAG medical centre attended to her immediately she was rushed to the facility. She said they insisted on seeing her Identity card before checking her. Nkem also revealed that her sibling had a premonition of something terrible happening a few days before the sad incident. She battled to contain her emotions while pouring out her heart to our correspondent.

“Last Sunday while at one of our prayer meetings in church, the man of God asked us to rebuke every monitoring spirit assigned to follow us about. Immediately, Oluchi got on her knees and started praying seriously, crying for God to rebuke evil away from her. I had never seen her pray like that before. It was as if she knew death was around the corner,” Nkem said.

Maybe the accounting undergraduate truly had an inkling of the calamity to befall her. In one of her last few posts on her Facebook page, Oluchi had given an insight into perhaps what was to come.

She wrote: “Many are born great but die unknown…everything that makes us human is vain.”

Nkem believes that maybe the aspiring accountant could have survived had staff at the UNILAG medical centre attended to her promptly immediately she was rushed into the facility last Tuesday.

“Oluchi was still alive by the time she was rushed to the medical centre of the school but the doctors and nurses refused to attend to her until they saw her identity card and confirmed that she was a student. They refused to attend to her and that was how the girl died there. The most shocking part was that when I got there, Oluchi wasn’t even placed on a bed; they had wrapped her body and placed it on the floor. I told the doctor that it was wrong for them to have done that because sometimes the person could still be alive at that point. It was an indirect statement from them that nothing was done to save her life. Even Uju, our last born who was with Oluchi when the incident happened, wasn’t attended to even with the injuries she sustained. It was after I confronted the doctor for not being sensitive enough that Uju was only given panadol and one small tablet. This was around 8:00pm. You can imagine how long she was abandoned from the time the cable fell on them.

“At the mortuary at LUTH that night, the officials refused to honour the death certificate issued for Oluchi, insisting that it was not valid because the doctor did not sign it. He probably didn’t sign it because he knew he didn’t examine her at all before pronouncing her dead. The ambulance that brought us from UNILAG had to take the nurse back to get the doctor to sign the death certificate while the body was wheeled to a corner outside the mortuary. It was until about 11:30pm that her body was finally taken into the morgue.

“Oluchi was brought to the medical centre alive but she died because they refused to treat her. It’s a shame that an ordinary school ID card would be more valuable than the life of a human, a promising young lady,” she said.

Several days without a sign of Oluchi has left a sour feeling on the lips of every member of the household. Oluchi’s mother, Augustina, a business woman, has remained inconsolable while relatives and close friends of the family are still grappling with the reality, wondering how death could have snatched one of their brightest away. Their grief is such that even the slightest memory of her leaves them in tears.

“An alarm clock Oluchi set to wake her up for prayers and studies every midnight rang on Thursday, everybody in the house woke up and started crying,” Ugo, eldest child of the family, told Saturday PUNCH.

“It brought back her memory into the hearts of everyone of us. We cried till morning. To imagine that she would not be here with us again is really heartbreaking,” she said.

According to Ugo, a bank worker, the fashionable and very friendly Oluchi was born on a Sunday after their mother fell into labour during a church service. Given a pet name for that reason, she grew up becoming everybody’s favourite in the home especially for her calm approach to issues that needed her input. Ugo, whose wedding had been fixed for October 17, wonders what that day would now look like without the charming and loveable Oluchi in the picture.

“She told me some months back that she wanted to become a chartered accountant before she graduated from the university and was working very hard towards achieving that dream. We were all very happy for her. The last time we saw, she told me that the dress she was going to wear on my wedding in October was ready and that she couldn’t wait to put it on. But rather than wait to put that fine dress on, the earth is going to be Oluchi’s cloth now. It is so painful to lose her at such a time in her life. I am really in pains,” she said.

The family pains could have been more severe had God not preserved Uju’s life. The 19-year-old who was with Oluchi at the time of the tragedy managed to escape with her life but not without some injuries to the face and hand. She could barely speak when our correspondent visited the family on Thursday.

On Wednesday morning, enraged students of UNILAG blocked major entrances into the school and shut down academic activities while registering their frustrations at the incident. Many of them blamed the university’s authorities for not doing enough to improve facilities on campus especially at their hostels. It took spirited attempts from top management officials and an address by the vice chancellor, Prof. Rahman Bello, who blamed the incident on electric cables belonging to the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, for the rampaging students to sheathe their swords.

A delegation from the institution among them Prof. Tunde Babawale and Dr. Karo Igbinaka visited the family on Thursday. They had come to commiserate with the family and assured them of their total support. Oluchi’s body was moved to her native Enugu on Friday where she would be buried next weekend.

CBT sample exam room

How will you compare the performance of candidates during this year’s Computer Based Tests with Paper Pencil Test?

You will recall that in 2012, we started PPT and CBT and what we call dual based test. In dual based test, the questions are given on the screen and they put the answer on paper. In PPT, we put the questions on paper and they answer them on paper, but for the CBT questions, they are on the screen; they provide the answers on the screen. In 2012, that’s when we started it. In 2013, we allowed it, the same in 2014. In 2015, we did the same. We have the data from at least our three years, trial before full blown CBT. We have discovered that every time, the CBT candidates were always performing better and this last full blown has also demonstrated that they are really performing better.

In terms of scores, don’t measure performance by scores alone but in terms of behaviour. Are they composing themselves in the examination hall? Are they really aware of what is going on? Have we really been able to cater for their problems? Have we been able to conduct exams for them seamlessly? These are things that we have done.

Let me tell you; one boy, Kingsley, a bright candidate, came here about six or seven weeks ago and he is visually impaired. He said he wanted to see me to thank me for giving the visually impaired the opportunity to do the exam and I said since we were having a management meeting, he should come in and say it in front of the management. He said he came to thank me and I said don’t thank me alone, thank all of them who are here for the opportunity given to you. According to him, he said he had taken the exam four times and the first three times he never scored up to 180 while the fourth time he did CBT, he scored 211. I said you scored 211 and he said yes. I have the tape and I can show it to you and I asked him where do you want to go and he said he wanted to study Law in the University of Jos, and I said Kingsley, 211 may not be able to take you to Law, however if they take you for any other Arts-related subject, please take it. And he said he will take it. I must confess that I almost wept for him and he was speaking impeccable English language. He never scored up to the cut off mark until this time and we said Kingsley, what problem did you encounter in the examination hall? He said no problem, that each time he had a problem, he would just tell the people that he needed somebody and he would get assistance to put him right and he practised before he started. I am just telling you how a visually impaired person performed better and the CBT helped him.

Don’t you think some of these people with special needs should be given special consideration in admission?

This was one of the issues I raised at the policy meeting. I listed people with special needs who should be given consideration for admission: people like albinos, visually impaired, physically challenged, Nigerians in Diaspora, foreigners who want to come to Nigeria to study and even prison inmates. I listed them and I told them these are people who you need to give consideration.

We can’t take 180 as cut-off mark – OAU

The Public Relations Officer of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, has said that the institution cannot adopt the JAMB’s cut-off mark of 180.

Olanrewaju told our correspondent on the telephone on Wednesday that adopting the 180 peg would lower the standards that define the institution.

Although he said the OAU had not decided the cut-off marks for the current admission process, he said 180 could only apply to institutions that were ‘looking for candidates.”

Olanrewaju said, “The OAU has a particular standard of excellence below which we cannot drop. We have to maintain that standard so that when they see our graduates anywhere, all the marks of excellence that define us will be there.”

While the PRO said that the university would determine its cut-off marks only after it would have conducted the post-UME, he explained that about 50,000 candidates applied for admission to OAU this year, out of which it would take 6,000.

Also, the JAMB 2015/2016 admission document indicated that 60,402 candidates applied to the university this year.

‘UI yet to decide’

Candidates who applied to the University of Ibadan will, however, have to wait for some time before they can know its cut-off marks.

According to the university’s Director of Public Communication, Mr. Tunji Oladejo, relevant authorities had not deliberated on the matter.

He, however, said that the average cut-off mark in the school was usually 200.

180 is the national benchmark – JAMB

Reacting to the allegations preferred against the body, the JAMB Head of Public Relations, Dr. Benjamin Fabian, said what the board did on July 14 was just to fix the national benchmark cut-off, which is 180 marks for universities.

According to him, agreed that universities are at liberty to fix their cut-off marks, none is to allow any candidate with a score below the national benchmark.

Fabian, who also dismissed insinuations that the board was liaising with private universities to shore up their enrolment figure, denied the posting of candidates outside their places of origin.

He said, “By next week, the national distribution list for the candidates will be out and they will find out that we did not move candidates out of their zones. We are also focusing on private universities as well as state universities. We are just trying to ensure that as many candidates as possible are accommodated in the process. The true situation is that many high-flyer universities, such as UNILAG, ABU, and OAU, have many candidates, while some do not.”

Few candidates applied to private universities

Meanwhile, despite the stable academic calendar in private universities, they still do not fascinate the majority of the Nigerian students and their sponsors.

As recently reported by our correspondent, for the second year running, information from the same JAMB document shows that only about two per cent of candidates seeking university education in the country prefer private ivory towers.

In fact, findings show that of the 1.4 million candidates, less than 20, 000 candidates – representing two per cent – chose to study in the more than 60 private universities in the country.

In other words, 98 per cent others prefer the public universities.

Of the candidates seeking admission to private universities, the Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, has the highest number of applicants with 3,042 candidates. Last year, the school belonging to the Living Faith Church, led by Bishop David Oyedepo, had 3,315 candidates.

The three oldest private universities – Babco*ck University, Ilishan-Remo; Madonna University, Okija and the Igbinedion University Okada – have 2, 101; 686 and 426 in that order. In 2014 UTME, the trio had 2,139, 1,021 and 658 applicants respectively.

The Bells University, Ota, Ogun State, owned by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has only 173 candidates; while the American University of Nigeria, Yola, belonging to a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has 198 candidates.

With only five candidates, the Kwarafa University, Wukari, occupied the last position in getting patronage from potential candidates seeking admission to private universities in the country this year. The Obong University, Obong, Ntak, Akwa Ibom State and the Southwestern University, Okun-Owa, Ogun State, occupied this position in 2014. They had only four candidates seeking placement in each of the institutions.

Again, whereas Obong University, Ntak, has increased its profile by having 16 candidates this year, Southwestern University, Okun-Owa, upped its ranking by having two more candidates. The Wellspring University, Ogbaneki, Benin, Edo State, has seven candidates while each of Renaissance University, Ojiagu-Agbani, Enugu and Rhena University, Obeama, Rivers State, has eight and 10 candidates respectively.

With 107,491 candidates, the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, again topped the chart, dusting the nation’s premier university, the University of Ibadan, to a distant seventh position. UNILORIN also topped the slot in 2014.

The University of Benin, Edo State, is occupying the second position this year with 71,497 candidates; Nnamdi Azikwe University, Awka, Anambra State, is third with 70,609 candidates, while the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, is fourth with 66,791 candidates.

The University of Lagos has 62,473 candidates, placing it in the fifth position; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has 60,254 candidates to occupy the sixth position, while UI has 47, 501 candidates. The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, which had 60,402 applicants in 2014, attracted only 43,967 candidates this year.

The University of Maiduguri, which used to attract a high number of students before the invasion of the North East by Boko Haram, appealed to only 20, 322 candidates.

Prof Dibu Ojerinde (JAMB)

Apart from Unilag,Michael Okpara University has the following on its website

“PUTME 2015/2016 Registration

Due to recent JAMB guidelines on admissions in Tertiary Institutions whereby JAMB Shortlists UTME Candidates, those who applied for admissions into first degree programmes in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike and scored 180 and above should check for their names in the University’s web portal (www.mouauportal.edu.ng) to confirm if they have been shortlisted for Post-UTME by JAMB….”

NEW JAMB POLICY: CASE FOR AND AGAINST

FOR NEW POLICY (WHY IT MAKES SENSE)

1.For those without access to a pc for now…See the striking statistics above which could explain the reasons for this new development.

a. Top ten universities and the total number of applicants (including those who passed and failed)

b. General application statistics sorted by faculty

c. General application statistics sorted by state of origin

d. And the main one, cumulative performance statistics

ps: if u cant view the pics directly, i’d advice u to save them then zoom in properly.

http://mouauportal.edu.ng/news-detail.php?nid=72

2.There are roughly 70 public/government own universities in Nigeria.

The total number of candidates that scored above 200 and are hence fully capable of being admitted to the university are 455 639. If these were equally shared among all these universities, each university would have an average of 6500 students . . . very convenient!

However, in the presentation I downloaded(see graphs above)showed that a mind-boggling 607330 students applied to just ten universities!!!

That means almost everyone that scored above 200 is gunning for one out of just ten universities.

It then only makes sense to redistribute the students so that each university has 6500 students each. Personally, I think that’s a very good idea, honestly.

Seeing this, I am thinking the students would be redistributed based on

a. Their scores.
b. Proximity of the universities to their states.
c. Catchment.

And all of these would be done with percentage based selection per course!

With these, there is no need to transfer anyone to private schools or Maiduguri. There are more than enough other places to transfer them to. Let students who have not been verified consider this.Ask your selves these.

a. What is the chance that I am among the top 20% in my chosen course.
b. How far is my school from my state?
c. Do I fall under my school’s catchment?

3.Candidates forwarded by JAMB

a.These are those candidates who met all criteria given in the Jamb brochure…it has nothing to do with JAMBscores.

b.Concerning the eligibility status, given that Unilag only begun their PUTME application today it is only normal for an online application to experience difficulties at early stage.

c.The given links http://admissions.unilag.edu.ng/?page_id=314 and http://www.ui.edu.ng/New-Regulations-and-JAMB-Revised-requirement
give no indication of “inter-school transfer of students by Jamb” these are only mere speculations by students who havent been verified.

d.It is also worthy to note that no student has been transferred to another school i.e. no Unilag student is seeing FUTO on his Jamb registration application

4.Yes jamb is changing school for some students with lower jamb score out of all the applied student for that course. Example if 5000 students got 200 and above and applied for medicine jamb will cut the amount of student with lower 200 and above score and transfer them to other school with less population .That is the eligibility stuff.

5,Well no one knows the criteria used in selecting eligible students. It’s entirely possible that other factors like WAEC results, subject combination, and such were taken into consideration too. That is an ASSUMPTION!

AGAINST NEW POLICY
1.Even at that, is it right? Someone has 203 in biochemistry and can enter while another has 254 in law but can’t enter, is it right? (es. [Assuming they take the top 500 applicants for each course] If the student with 203 is in the top 500 for biochem, they’ll be eligible for the PUTME. If the student with 254 isn’t in the top 500, of course they won’t be eligible.)

2.All the graph na wash abeg! Hogwash!!!! angry angry angry angry

3.Me I cant keep calm oh! The eba I jst swallowd no gree go dwn sef! I wan die here! I scored 267, 4 Med in UNIBEN. If dey transfer me to Borno nko? Keep calm fire!!!

4.Even afta all dis, one senator go call one VC and say “the boy/girl must be admitted” and the VC go say “yes honorable senator”…..

5.And na dis same JAMB go give am admission letter ooo… yeye people.

6.Law has 5,000+ applicants.Business administration has 4,000+ and someone with 226 for business admin was told she’s eligible. Two people with 236 and 228 for finance was told ineligible and a lady with 214 was declared eligible.Biochemistry has 697 applicants, Microbiology 978 and someone with 219 for BCH was given ineligible while 220 for MCB was given eligible. angry sad

7.Buhari pls sack this dibu man!!!he has finished us,he is a dupe!!everything about jamb is money, money!!money!!!our only saviour now is buhari, pls sack this man called dibu ojerinde,he is not the owner of jamb neither is his father the owner of jamb.!!!.This man sold this form for N5000, he sold his useless book for N500 X 2 million candidates = N1billion naira for dibu. Nobody talked. He owns over 4 cbt centres where he makes millions. He sent people out of their state to write exams nobody complained, he sold change of institutions/ course for #3000 when he knew he will be choosing the courses and institutions by himself. This man is not fit for this job because he is self-centered. He wanted the Fg to stop post utme exams, but failed, he decided to deprive the schools from the money they make from the exams thereby depriving the students off their right while his children school abroad.

8.Nawa oo.They say one thing today, another one tomorrow. Our government is very deceitful. they should have made this known before the form came out,so people would know what to do before now.. I feel bad for those innocent people caught unawares.

9.Nawao… devil want to use dis dibu dis time around.Even with ur 250, 270,280.You can’t still write ur post utme in unilag. That UNILAG own too much sef ..So far so good I believe peeps are going there to just be a product of the school name and make expressions like. Am studying Education in Unilag grin. (Serious competition ni o)

10.Candidates sef don over populate the school, why won’t they do shakara for una ? I know of people who have seated for JAMB like 4/5 times and still putting in Unilag as first choice.Oga jonah sef change the school name una still no gree. grin cheesy.Unilag is a school of social competition of y,y boys and runz babes.

11.Okay, let me shock you. I know two people(both from the South West, if you care to know). One of them, who had 271 has been declared ineligible to write PUTME for MBBS in UNILAG and the other with score 217 has been declared legible for the same MBBS. Does your theory still hold?

12.Everything for naija na seriousstruggle- Jamb nawahala! After admission : u go face all the suu strikes: ASUUNASU,COASU,MUSUU, CKINCKENSUU, RATSUUe.t.c. after graduation u go wait tire for Nysc misplacement. To crown it all, u go come enter the most killing neigbour market, sowi labor market abi na britico eng we dey speak, labour market. God bless naija oooo!!

Parents, candidates protest as UNILAG defends cut-off marks

UNILAG – LAGOSBOOKSCLUB.WORDPRESS.COM (14)

Hundreds of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination candidates on Wednesday morning stormed the University of Lagos to protest against the decision of the institution to stop them from doing the forthcoming post-UTME.

The candidates alleged that the authorities of university, in liaison with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, had rolled out a new admission procedure that prevented them from taking the examination to secure admission into the ivory tower.

Their allegation comes as UNILAG and JAMB defended their different positions in the exercise.

The Head of Public Relations, JAMB, Dr. Benjamin Fabian, said the board did not intentionally exclude any candidate.

He said, “We are only trying to ensure that candidates have better chances for admission this year unlike what obtained in the past. This time around, we do not want to wait till universities end their first choice admissions. We do not want some candidates to forfeit their admission easily. By next week, we shall release the national distribution list that will open more opportunities for them.”

The Registrar, UNILAG, Dr. Taiwo Ipaye, said the university was only working with the post- UTME screening list sent by JAMB.

According to her, only candidates whose names were forwarded to the University of Lagos by JAMB are eligible for the 2015/2016 post-UTME screening.

Meanwhile, many of the candidates, who came with their parents, had converged on the university entrance as early as 7am, chanting solidarity songs and demanding the removal of the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde.

Their action not only caused gridlock at the entrance of the university, it later resulted in the closure of the gate.

The protesters, led by the President, Association of Tutorial School Operators of Nigeria, Mr. Sodunke Oludotun, later forced their way into the university.

According to the protesters, the university upped its cut-off to 250 marks against the recommended 180 marks by JAMB.

JAMB, on July 14 had after its sixth consultative meeting with stakeholders in Abuja, pegged the cut-off mark to 180 for candidates seeking university admission and 150 marks for those seeking places in polytechnics and colleges of education.

Oludotun, who spoke to our correspondent, described the upping of the cut-off marks at UNILAG as illegal.

He said, “Contrary to Prof. Dibu Ojerinde’s announcement of 180 as a minimum score, UNILAG has started selling post-UTME form for only the candidates that scored 250 and above and thereby putting the lives of about 24, 000 qualified and prospective candidates in a state of uncertainty and despair. We are protesting to call the attention of the Federal Government to this injustice.”

JAMB Official Cut-Off Mark: What It Actually Means

Jamb has officially announced that the 2015 official cut-off mark is 180 for Universities and 150 for polytechnics, Colleges of Education and other certificate awarding institutions.

However, from comments and feedback we have received, it seems that most candidates have not clearly understood the import of this.it therefore seems necessary to explain what it actually means.

Many candidates for instance are think that since they have applied to study in a university and have scored up to 180 that their choice institution must consider them for admission going by the official cut-off mark for universities is 180.

You should know by now that most Federal Universities accept only candidates who scored 200 and above and nothing less and even when such universities adopts the official cut-off mark of 180 some courses will demand that you still score 200 and above to be considered for admission.

Similar permutation applies to polytechnics and colleges of education with official cut-off mark of 150.

You may ask, “What is then the essence of the cut-off mark if institutions won’t stick to it?” I will explain.

The 180 official cut-off mark for universities only means that no university is permitted to accept any candidate with UTME score below 180.

For polytechnics, Colleges of Education and other certificate awarding institutions that have official cut-off mark of 150, it means that non- of these institutions will accept a candidates that have anything less that 150 as UTME score.

So where as institutions cannot go below their official cut-off marks, they can go above the cut-off marks.

Now, I guess you understand.

AS we all get ready to pop champagne to celebrate a remarkable year and count down to 2013, we atVanguard Learning bring you a collection of stories that made 2012 outstanding.

ASUU strike
The year started off with the suspension of strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which kept public universities under lock and key for two months.

The strike was in protest of the Federal Government’s refusal to honour an agreement it reached with the union in 2009 to arrest and reverse the decay in the university system and reposition it for greater responsibilities in national development; reverse the brain-drain, not only by enhancing the remuneration of academic staff, but also by disengaging them from the encumbrances of a unified civil service wage structure; and restore universities through immediate, massive and sustained financial intervention among others.

ASUU and FG finally reached a common stand on the following: funding; review of laws that impinge on university autonomy; separate salary structure for academic staff in the universities; earned allowances to entitled academic staff; and pension for university academics and compulsory retirement age.

Rainstorm kill students, teacher
On Monday, February 13, 2012, an early morning rainstorm wreaked havoc in several parts of Lagos, destroying houses, cars, electric poles, and uprooting many trees, thereby leaving 15 persons dead, teachers and students inclusive.

Among the dead were 10 children, who drowned at Shibiri Ekunpa area of Ojo when a passenger ferry taking them to school capsized. Also, two students of Goodness Comprehensive High School were killed when the storm destroyed their school building, while a teacher at St. Gregory College, Obalende, was killed when a mast collapsed on him.

Also, Jakande Low Cost Housing Estate Primary School, Oke Afa Junior and Senior Colleges had their roofs blown away by the rainstorm.

8.43% education budget
Concerned education stakeholders were shocked at the allocation of N400.15 billion (8.43 per cent) of the 2012 annual budget to the education sector, a far cry from the 26 per cent recommended by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO.UNILAG – LAGOSBOOKSCLUB.WORDPRESS.COM (34)

A breakdown of the budget showed that N345.091bn (82 per cent) was allotted to recurrent expenditure while a meager N55.056bn (18 per cent) is for capital expenditure. N317.896bn was proposed for personnel cost and N27.192bn was for overheads.

Nigeria spends less than 9 per cent of her annual budget on education, far below what other African countries spend on education. Botswana spends 19.0 per cent; Swaziland, 24.6 per cent; Lesotho, 17 per cent; South Africa, 25.8 per cent; Cote d’Ivoire, 30 per cent; Burkina Faso, 16.8 per cent; Ghana, 31 per cent; Kenya, 23 per cent; Uganda, 27 per cent; Tunisia, 17 per cent; and, Morocco, 17.7 per cent.

Death of UNILAG VC
Just when things were getting normal, the Nigerian academic community was thrown into mourning following the death of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofeluwe.

Sofeluwe, 62, suffered a heart attack in his office and was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital where he suffered another attack before giving up the ghost in the early hours of Saturday, May, 2012.

Sofoluwe, who was appointed on January 31, 2010 as the 10th VC, got his first degree from the University of Lagos in Computer Science.

Educating 9.5 million almajiris
Resolute in achieving Education for All by 2015, the Federal Government launched the Almajiri model school in Sokoto State, which has been replicated in other northern states, aimed at broadening the horizon of over 9.5 million almajiris on spiritual and moral values.

President Jonathan, at the inauguration of the first Almajiri Model Boarding School in Gagi, Sokoto State, said his administration believed that the time had come for the nation to build on the moral foundations of the traditional school system by providing the Almajiri with conventional knowledge and skills that would enable them to fully realise their creative and productive potentials.

Government had so far constructed 35 of such model schools, while states with large population of Almajiris would have both the boarding and day schools. The school comprises 15 blocks of classrooms, language laboratory, clinic, recitation room, vocational workshop, Mallams’ quarters and a dinning hall.

Mass failures in public examination
Public attention was, again, drawn to the rot in the education sector following the mass failure of students in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

In the May/June 2012 WAEC exams, only 38.81 per cent of the candidates or 649,156 of 1,695,878 candidates obtained credits in five subjects and above, including English language and Mathematics.

Of the 1,695,878 candidates, 6.70 per cent (112,000) were withheld for various report of alleged involvement in examination malpractice; 46.14 per cent (771,731) obtained six credits and above; 56.93 per cent (952,156) obtained five credits and above; 66.24 per cent (1,107,747) obtained credits and above in four subjects, while 74.55 per cent (1,246,729) obtained credits and above in three subjects.

The results were not any better in the UTME as, according to JAMB Registrar/Chief Executive, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, of the 1,503,931 candidates that sat for the exam, only 3 scored 300 and above; 901 scored between 270-299; 71,339 candidates scored between 250-269; 601,151 scored between 200-249; 374,920 candidates scored between 170-199; while 336,330 scored below 170.

27,266 results where withheld in 52 centres in eight states for exam malpractice, while number of invalid results was 5,161.

License withdrawal
The National Universities Commission (NUC) threw some spanners in the wheel when it announced the suspension of the licences of seven private universities on July 4.

The affected universities – Madonna University, Lead City University, Tansian University, Caritas University, Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Achievers University and Obong University – had their operational licences suspended for failing to live up to guidelines stipulated for running of universities in Nigeria by NUC.

According to the Executive Secretary, NUC, Professor Julius Okojie, some of their offences were unwillingness to comply with regulations, inappropriate governance structure and poor management of academic activities. He added that the suspension would be lifted as soon as they comply.

Ban of part-time programmes
Then came the ban on part-time programmes in varsities by the NUC, which stakeholders say would deny millions of Nigerians whose only chances of acquiring higher education were through part-time programmes.

According to Okojie, the ban is aimed at rationalising the activities as well as ensuring that best practices and standards are maintained. He added that until the ban is lifted, admission into part-time programme will not exceed 20 per cent of a varsity’s total intake while lectures will be restricted to varsities campuses only.

PhD truck drivers
The value of our educational certificates was brought to question when Dangote Group announced that it received 13,000 applications from graduates for employment as truck drivers.Of this number, six PhD, 704 Masters and over 8,460 Bachelor degree holders applied for the Graduate Executive Truck Driver positions.

According to the Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, most of the applicants are from reputable universities and our plan is to eventually make them self-dependent.

The drivers will get trip allowances on each trip along with their salaries, and will own the trucks at no interests or repayments after they must have reached 300,000km, (about 140 trips from Lagos to Kano) within two to four years.

ALUU 4
The death of the four University of Port Harcourt students that were lynched in Aluu Community, Ikwerre LGA, Rivers State, for allegedly stealing phones and laptops would forever remain in the minds of many.

The students, Chiadika Lordson, Ugonna Kelechi Obusor, Mike Lloyd Toku, and Tekena Elkanah, were beaten and later set ablaze by members of the community.

According to an eye witness, Miss Ibisobia Elkanah, sister to Tekena, policemen who visited the scene when the students were being beaten encouraged the mob to ‘burn them alive’
